How to reprogram your engine computer

Flashing — or erasing and reprogramming — your engine’s computer is a legitimate way to keep a car’s engine control modules (ECMs) up to date. Cars newer than 1996 should have this done in order to make certain that microprocessors such as the power train and fuel injectors work the right way. When programming is up to date with anything, your engine works much better. Under hood Service explains that this costs between $ 80 and $ 120 at repair shops if you need it done. Your car can be flashed by you if you have the right equipment around.

Engine computer reprogramming solution

When reprogramming an engine computer, a scanner is attached to the diagnostic port in a car, which is typically inside the car, beneath the steering wheel. Old programming is erased, and then replaced with one of the most up-to-date software provided by the auto manufacturer. A scanning device that connects to the diagnostic port, a connection to the Internet and a USB cable are the only things you have to do this, although in the past new programming required taking parts out of the car. The ECM ends up having new software flashed on in with info coming from the site the manufacturer puts together.

How often does the ECM have to be flashed?

Auto repair shops say flashing should be done once each few years, and this may be appropriate. However, it’s typically only something that needs to be addressed on a need-to basis, unless a sweeping pronouncement is issued by the manufacturer as part of a recall movement. Routine maintenance shouldn’t consist of flashing when doing anything else to make sure your car works.

Getting the job done with DAY flasher

This is fairly easy. See what software updates are on your automobile manufacturer’s site. Download the update into a flash programming device. You may need more software if you would like to have a proper engine turning. If you’d like to get some more info, then check places like DIYEFI.org. You should also consult with your state’s motor automobile authority, as more radical aspects of engine programming may not be street legal, which is the case in tough emissions states like California.
