Tow boat smacks into New Orleans oil well, causes new spill

The BP oil spill disaster will continue to affect local economies around the Gulf of Mexico for numerous years, and also the environment will require decades of recovery. Now the Associated Press reports that New Orleans is back within the thick of an oil slick thanks to an errant tow boat called the Pere Ana C. The Louisiana marshland was hit and there was a wellhead in head. MSNBC reports that Plaquemines Parish President Nungesser explains oil is shooting within the air right about now.

Well located south of New Orleans

The gushing oil well is located in an inland waterway along the border between Plaquemines Parish and Jefferson Parish, approximately 65 miles south of New Orleans. Roads won’t bring you directly to the place. Oil from the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico was being moved meaning there were already workers in Barataria Bay. The owner of the newly damaged well is currently unknown. Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts explains that there is quite a bit of oil coming from the Pere Ana C. collision. It is nevertheless unknown how much of the oil is leaking or how it will be cleaned up considering the area is only accessed by boat. There is a concern that natural gas can be leaking with the oil since some gas clouds have been reported in the area recently.

Pere Ana C. hit around Mud Lake

Tuesday Morning, the Pere Ana C. collision happened pretty close to Mud Lake. The Coast Guard ship went to the LaRose area after this happened. There have been no injuries reported yet. Media sources say that authorities are trying to find who the well belongs to so they can find somebody to clean it up. Nobody knows if this spill is as costly as the BP spill with Deepwater Horizon.
